What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma refers to a group of diseases that cause vision loss from damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma is often called “the silent thief of sight,” as symptoms can appear so gradually that you do not realize you are losing your vision until it is too late.

Proper testing procedures performed during comprehensive eye exams can pinpoint early signs of glaucoma. Although there is no cure for glaucoma, early treatment can prevent further damage and save your vision.

Different Types of Glaucoma

Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma that occurs when fluid does not drain properly out of the eye. The buildup of fluid makes the pressure inside the eye rise, creating stress on the optic nerve.

The elevated intraocular pressure slowly damages the optic nerve, which begins to cause vision loss. This type of glaucoma usually progresses gradually.

Angle-closure glaucoma is less common but much more severe. This type of glaucoma occurs when the eye’s drainage angle suddenly becomes blocked, causing the intraocular pressure to rise rapidly. This occurrence is considered an eye emergency and should be addressed as soon as possible.

Secondary glaucoma occurs due to an injury, infection, or tumour that causes the pressure in the eye to rise. This can also happen as a side effect of certain medications and other underlying conditions.

Normal-tension glaucoma is suspected to occur due to an abnormally sensitive optic nerve. With this type of glaucoma, the intraocular pressure remains normal, so it is generally unknown why this happens.
