Comprehensive Testing for Accurate Diagnosis

As technology advances, new and exciting tools emerge that allow your optometrist to understand your eyes better. Digital retinal imaging has helped track and treat millions of eyes, and at Vision Care Centre, we are committed to providing the latest technology to safeguard your ocular health.

The newest addition to the diagnostic optical imaging toolbox is the optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanner.

What is Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical coherence tomography is a noninvasive imaging technology used to take cross-sectional pictures of your retina. These images show the retina’s different layers and allow us to examine them for early detection and diagnosis of many retinal diseases.

An OCT scanner works by taking a rapid series of images of the retina at varying light levels that penetrate to different layers. OCT technology is comparable to ultrasound but uses light instead of sound to create images. However, unlike ultrasound, there is no direct contact with soft tissue, so no pressure is put on the eye.

Completely noninvasive, the scan gives us an interactive, 3-dimensional model of your retina, macular region, and optic nerve. OCT scans require no extra preparations or pre-exam drops as the test is painless and never comes into contact with your eyes.

Optical Coherence Tomography FAQ

Not very. A generic equivalent is if someone shone a penlight in your eye for a second during regular daytime. It is very comfortable and is not sudden, like a camera flash.

If you have any light sensitivity issues, please let your optometrist know at the start of any exam.

Similar to how a geologist uses sound and vibration to peer into the earth, optical coherence tomography scans measure the depth at which light penetrates each of the retina’s layers. As the retina reacts, a layered map of your eye is generated with each layer assigned by the computer.

When the scan is complete, a 3-dimensional and cross-sectional image of your retina can be viewed.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have, so you feel fully comfortable.
