Helping You Protect Your Vision

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that causes central vision loss. Typically, AMD occurs as a result of ageing and is the leading cause of vision loss for people over 50.

AMD does not cause total blindness, but will progressively block your central vision. Central vision is necessary to complete most tasks, such as reading and driving.

Typically, AMD worsens gradually, with early stages being largely asymptomatic. However, in some cases, AMD progresses rapidly and can lead to permanent vision loss in 1 or both eyes.

Types of Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Dry AMD

Dry AMD is the most common form of age-related macular degeneration. This type of AMD occurs when clumps of protein, called drusen, begin to form and collect in the eye. As the proteins grow and multiply, they begin to block and distort vision.

Wet AMD

Wet AMD is the more serious of the 2, when new, abnormal blood vessels grow underneath the macula. These blood vessels rupture and leak blood and other fluids into the eye, creating dark spots in your field of vision.

The abnormal blood vessels can eventually create a scar, which may lead to permanent central vision loss.

Testing for AMD

At Vision Care Centre, we will test for AMD as a part of your comprehensive eye exam. We use various imaging technologies, such as optical coherence tomography and digital retinal imaging to view your eyes at different angles. We also use genetic testing to provide us with the best information to prevent progression of macular degeneration.

Treatment for AMD

Currently, there is no blanket cure for AMD. However, ocular vitamin supplementation and healthy lifestyle habits can help slow the progression of the disease.

Some beneficial habits to adopt:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants
  • Attend regular comprehensive eye exams
  • Exercise regularly
  • Protect your eyes and skin from harmful UV rays
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol
