Vision Care Centre Provides Effective Treatments for Glaucoma. Ask Us How.

Types Of Glaucoma And Associated Symptoms

While a cure for glaucoma has not yet been discovered, research and modern technology have made it much easier for your Vision Care Centre Optometrist to detect the symptoms and provide treatment to prevent further damage to your eyes.

The most common symptom of glaucoma is higher than normal pressure inside the eye, as well as visible damage to the optic nerve where it enters the back of the eye.

Chronic Glaucoma

This type of glaucoma is the most prevalent form of glaucoma. When fluid pressure in the anterior chamber of the eye, which is between the white part of the eye, or cornea, and the iris builds up, it can cause damage to the optic nerve.

The most common form of pressure buildup is when there are clogs in the drainage canals of the eye, as the fluid inside your eye has nowhere to go and thus remains inside the eyeball. For this reason, early detection can help mitigate most if not all symptoms.

Acute Glaucoma

Inside the eye, when the angle of the anterior chamber narrows suddenly due to either disease, trauma, or genetic predisposition, and blocks the drainage canals of the eye, the condition is known as acute glaucoma. The most obvious and severe symptoms are severe eye pain, headache, blurred vision and halos, and retinal tearing.

Should you experience any of the symptoms suddenly, seek an immediate emergency appointment with Vision Care Centre for an Optometrist to investigate. Immediate treatment is usually available, and in severe cases a same-day referral to a glaucoma specialist may be needed.

Normal Tension Glaucoma

This type of glaucoma occurs in people who have normal intra-ocular pressure, yet are at risk for damage to their optic nerve. Factors of risk include a family history of glaucoma, systemic heart disease, and Asian ancestry.

A special tool called an ophthalmoscope is used to investigate the shape and color of the optic nerve inside the eye to detect this type of glaucoma.

Pediatric Glaucoma

Very rarely, a baby’s drainage canals may not develop completely during their prenatal period. Larger than normal eyes, visible clouding, excessive and visible tearing in the eye, and pronounced sensitivity to light are all symptomatic of possible pediatric glaucoma. If detected early enough, microsurgery and/or laser surgery can correct this condition.

Important Information to Know:

What would happen if I have glaucoma and left it untreated?

If glaucoma is left untreated, vision will eventually narrow, entering a condition known as tunnel vision, where only light directly ahead of the eye will be transmitted to the brain. Should the glaucoma worsen, full black blindness is possible.

Are there any preexisting conditions I may have that put me at higher risk?

Yes. After age 40, the risk increases for glaucoma. As well, diabetics are at higher risk for glaucoma at any age. If anyone in your family has had glaucoma, there may be a genetic predisposition for you to develop glaucoma as well.

When booking your appointment to visit a Vision Care Centre Optometrist, be sure to inform our staff of any preexisting conditions that you may have in relation to glaucoma.

Can glaucoma be treated?

Yes, through either medications and regular Optometrist visits, or, in more severe cases, microsurgery and/or laser surgery to correct blockages in the drainage canals of the eye. The earlier that glaucoma is detected, the higher the chance of effective treatment and repair.

Neuro-Visual Training Testimonials

  • Before beginning my therapy at Vision Care Centre, I frequently struggled with my vision. As a university student, reading and taking notes in lectures were a significant struggle and using my glasses caused great distress. Headaches and motion sickness were very common with and without the use of my glasses. On a routine check-up with Dr. Ramesh, I communicated my concerns and was quickly enrolled in the neuro-visual training program. My wonderful neuro-visual trainer, Kelley would provide me with comprehensive tasks that would both challenge and help me develop understanding and control of my vision. I no longer use my glasses, suffer from headaches or motion sickness and have great confidence in my vision.

  • We want to thank you very much for all your hard work that went into Alicia's Neuro-Visual Therapy. It has opened Alicia's ability to do so much more both personally and in school, and what means most to us as her parent, we see how confident Alicia is in herself and in her school work. She was always falling down a lot and she always had her head tilted to one side. Now she is focused to get her tasks done on time and the best part, correctly...

  • I would like to thank you and Cristina for working with my son over the past year. They have not only trained his eyes but they provided him with a sense of confidence in his abilities. When we first came for our check up it was only mentioned on the side that his reading was regressing...We knew it had to do with some of his Chronic Lyme Treatment and we did not want things to get worse... We will be forever grateful that our son will not be another statistic of "lost kids" in the school system being medicated to manage behavioral issues which would have undoubtedly arisen the worse his eyes got.

  • Before eye therapy school was hard and not fun. School is now easy and I look forward to go to school every day. Eye therapy has helped me be more focused. Eye therapy has taught me how to read, write and learn in a different and better way. Thank you for all your help.

  • The staff at Vision Care Centre has been amazing while Nicholas has been undergoing his vision therapy. They have been incredibly patient while Nicholas was having some difficult weeks. Over the course of therapy, his focus in school has improved, his headaches have lessened and he has started scoring goals in Hockey again. We feel good and are happy with the whole experience.

  • The 36 week eye therapy program that Hannah has completed has been a very positive experience. The main benefits have been to teach her how to focus her eyes on a specific task and to have her eyes work effectively with the rest of her body. This has improved her reading, effectiveness and focus at school and her hand eye coordination...

  • When I started the program, I had trouble focusing and sitting and doing my work. Since I started the 36 week program, this has changed. I focused on getting better grades than I did in grade 2 (now in grade 3). I have got A’s in all subjects this year. Now I can sit and do my work, I am able to focus and I am not always looking around the room at other things. I used to need a ruler to read, now I don’t and I can read better and faster than I used to. I am doing great and have learned a lot through this experience.
